Malcolm X

STREAMING VIDEO
2 Class Sessions

We see his image on t-shirts and posters and in movies and music videos. Malcolm X is arguably the most iconic political figure in American culture. The Nation of Islam leader, who posed a profound challenge to the integrationism of the Civil Rights Movement, inspired the “Black Power” movement of the 1960s and 1970s as well as various forms of Black nationalism, including, most recently, the Hotep Nation. Yet very few of his admirers have studied his thought. In this 2-part course taught by historian Thaddeus Russell, we examine the ideas of Malcolm X through a close reading of his autobiography and speeches.

This course will ask whether Malcolm X was right about the racist character of American society, the “Uncle Tom” politics of Martin Luther King, and the value of racial segregation and nationalism.
