Anarchism

STREAMING VIDEO
3 Class Sessions

With the rise of the “Antifa” movement and the HBO documentary series The Anarchists, the ideology of anarchism has re-entered mainstream political discourse.

This course will examine the history and philosophy of anarchism, from its origins as a defined ideology in the 19th century through the present. Particular attention will be paid to major anarchist thinkers such as William Godwin, Herbert Spencer, Lysander Spooner, Max Stirner, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Mikhail Bakunin, Emma Goldman, Peter Kropotkin, Murray Rothbard, Bob Black and John Zerzan, and the many schools of anarchist thought that they influenced, including Mutualism, Individualism, Egoism, Agorism, Anarcho-Communism, Anarcho-Syndicalism, Anarcho-Capitalism, and the “Antifa” movement of the 21st century.

Taught by historian Thaddeus Russell, this 3-part course will ask whether anarchism provides a useful critique of the state, capitalism, and social relations and offers a way toward a freer society.
